From an autobiographical perspective, this text proposes an approach to the daily life of exiled scholars in Mexico. As an introduction, on the one hand, it will outline the exile experience of a Catalan family persecuted by the Franco regime in Spain and France until its ensuing transfer to Mexico; on the other hand, a brief exposition of the characteristics of the Catalan exile in Mexico will be made. On this basis, the text proposes a biographical approach to two not well-known characters of the republican exile in Mexico, the psychiatrist Gonzalo R. Lafora and the historian Jose Maria Miquel i Vergés, both linked to the Casa de España, that came to be El Colegio de México. This paper rescues biographical portions of two exiles whose lives and works have not deserved special attention. Their achievements and failures will be analyzed in the context of the foundation of El Colegio de México, and for that, unpublished documents have been consulted in the historical archive of this institution. We must take into consideration the vicissitudes of academic lives in Mexican exile, the way they faced difficult economic conditions, and the efforts made to develop scientific projects that helped to enlarge the frontiers of medical and historical knowledge in Mexico.
