Der am 17. Januar 1901 in Vilnius als Untertan des russischen Zaren geborene Aron Gurwitsch erhielt im März 1919 das Reifezeugnis am Königlichen Gymnasium in Danzig und bezog im selben Jahr die Philosophische Fakultät der Universität Berlin. Er studierte zunächst dort, dann in Frankfurt am Main Philosophie, Mathematik, Physik und Psychologie. 1928 promovierte er an der Universität Göttingen unter Moritz Geiger mit der Dissertation Phänomenologie der Thematik und des reinen Ich. Darin umriss er erstmals die Verknüpfung der Phänomenologie Edmund Husserls mit der Gestaltpsychologie – eine Verknüpfung, die sich für sein Schaffen insgesamt als programmatisch erweisen sollte.
