A heuristic, or a guiding framework

Judith Bessant

pp. 136-152

Future historians may regard our time as one characterized by a coming together of significant events: the Internet and associated digital media, and concern about "what's wrong with democracy" (Zakaria 2013, Baumann 1999, Furedi 2005, Hay 2006, Hay and Stoker 2009, Ginsborg 2009). This takes place in a context of repeated instances of large numbers of people engaging in new and high-profile forms of political activism that rely on new digital communications media. How can we best interpret these developments that mark our time?
