La rhétorique arabe (balagà), fondée au XIe siècle par cAbd al-Qâhir al- ôurëânï (m. 1078), a développé un modèle original d'analyse de l'énoncé. Ce modèle reconnaît le rôle central de l'énonciateur comme élément central dans la constitution de la relation predicative. Elle a également élaboré un concept très général, celui de « contrainte » (qayd), pour rendre compte de toutes les modifications susceptible d'affecter les termes de base de la relation predicative pour donner naissance à un énoncé effectif. Le caractère général de ce concept permet de reconnaître ce modèle comme une grammaire de dépendance.
