Rhetorik (lat. ars rhetorica; gr. rhetorike tedine) ist die ›Kunst‹ — im Sinne des älteren Kunstbegriffs, als Kunstlehre — wirkungsvoller Kommunikation (vgl. Knape 2000b, 33 f.). Ihr Gegenstand ist die monologische Einzelrede in Prosa (lat. oratio soluta). Das unterscheidet sie von der Poetik, die für die Dichtung (in traditioneller Auffassung: ›gebundene Rede‹; lat. oratio ligata) zuständige Produktionstheorie, die ansonsten auf rhetorischen Vorgaben aufsetzt.
