Gratitude and spirituality

Gratitude has emerged as a topic of renewed interest among psychological scientists. In theoretical terms, gratitude can be understood from both interpersonal and intrapersonal perspectives, which we apply to understanding the positive association between gratitude and spirituality. This association could indicate that spirituality enhances gratitude (or that gratitude enhances spirituality); these possibilities and alternative explanations are evaluated using the existing research literature. The gratitude-spirituality link may extend across cultures and religions, although further research is needed to address the moderators and mediators of this relation, and to explore the ways in which this link can promote positive outcomes for individuals and communities.
