In 1869, a Bulgarian Learned Society was founded in Braila, Romania. It was renamed Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) in 1911. Up to 1947 BAS was an Academy of the classical Western European type. After 1947, as in all East European countries, BAS was restructured and reorganized following the model of the Soviet Academy of Sciences.
